If you are like most Naturalistas, then a majority of the time you care for your hair at home and rarely see a licensed professional. I get it. You’ve been watching all of those YouTube videos and they teach you how to do most of everything. Well I agree that there is a wealth of information to be learned online. However, in my humble opinion, nothing takes the place of consulting with a professional cosmetologist.

I am having lots of fun as the new “Dream Kids (DK)” Brand Ambassador, and part of my job is to test and experiment with the new DK Texture Manageability System (TMS). The DKTMS is unique because it allows the hair to flip from curly to straight AND extends your straight styles for up to 4-6 weeks. I wanted to make sure that after I applied the product I could give my daughter a nice flat ironing with blow dry. In the past,my straight styles have looked a little James Brownish:), so this time I decided I wasn’t going to fool around with my amateur skills and went to see my favorite beauty educator, Ms. Mikko of Dudley’s Beauty College.

I shampooed my daughter’s hair with the Dream Kids TMS Anti Reverston shampoo and conditioner.  Twenty minutes after the product was applied I sectioned the hair into four parts and started the blow drying process. Like most of you, I had my favorite tools with me. I just knew they would work because YouTube told me so!:) Welp! No quicker than I had taken out my precious Denman brush and ceramic flat iron, Ms. Mikko asked me to put them up so we could work with the best tools to get the job done.

Ms. Mikko took her time and patiently showed me how to blow dry my daughter’s hair with special techniques for natural hair. After several tries I finally got the hang of it! I will probably need to continue to practice so that I can get the same bone straight results. I love that the Dream Kids Texture Manageability System helps extend straight hair styles, but I think in order to achieve the best final results, one should learn to blow dry and flat iron like a pro. I asked Ms. Mikko for her best tips and tricks for straightening natural hair. Check out what she had to say:

  • ·         To achieve and maintain healthy hair, natural hair should be trimmed frequently this will help to prevent split and uneven ends.

  • ·         Protective styling is a great way to guard hair from damage and reduce dry brittle scalp. It also keeps hair protected from elements such as cold weather,.

  • ·         Oils should be used sparingly when flat ironing or blow drying the hair. Too much oil weighs the hair down and can contribute to heat damage.

  • ·         Are you getting enough vitamins? Eating healthy food and drinking water is the best way to grow long hair.
